When a landslide destroyed a section of S.R. 14 between Cedar City and Cedar Breaks, designers determined rebuilding the road in the original location would require moving over a million yards of material, an expensive and time consuming undertaking.
Designers, and the contractor determined that by moving the road slightly north, they could reduce the amount of debris that needed to be removed, therefore reducing the time and cost of fixing the roadway and opening it to the public.
Once removal of the slide debris is complete, the roadway will open for limited daily access on June 1 between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday and all day on weekends beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Fridays through 7:00 a.m. on Mondays. When the roadway is initially opened, it will be dirt only. Permanent pavement will be put down this summer.
